The Master Of My Own Happiness

I had a period a few months back of feeling a little ‘meh’. Something was missing, something to look forward to and then experience and then look back on. That something was live music. SO, as the title of this post suggests, I took matters in to my own hand and booked a handful of gigs to go to alone.

I’d previously been to a few alone, back when I was in the Netherlands- namely Jake Bugg and Paramore, and then Gabrielle Aplin when I was back in the UK. It’s not quiteeee the same but when the bands good enough you really don’t need anyone else if there isn’t anyone! Back in October-ish Bon Iver announced an eight night stint at the Eventim Apollo and I just could not miss out. It would’ve killed me! WHAT. A. NIGHT. I felt absolutely blessed to witness that show. They didn’t book a support band for this particular night, instead calling it ‘An Evening with Bon Iver’. They took to the stage early, played their second album in it’s entirety (!!!) before a short interval. They came back on and played their latest album in full minus two tracks, Blood Bank and then ended on Skinny Love. It was just incredible. I loved every single minute. The production, the staging, the sound, everything was just perfect.

Then, on Wednesday night I went to see Young Fathers at Camden Roundhouse. Holy moly. I have never seen such an intense performance. In case you aren’t familiar with them, they’re a Mercury Prize winning group who rap/sing lo-fi atmospheric hip hop. It’s unlike anything else and totally awesome. They performed in front of a giant lit up screen which alternated between making silhouetting the band or illuminating them, and this simple aesthetic was all that was needed. The energy from the group was insane, they never stopped dancing.

I also went to see Everything Everything with my buddy Dan, who I’ve now seen 6 times but this was probably the best time I’d seen them! It was just such an enjoyable evening! I’ve had such a good time at live music events recently, I’m eagerly awaiting the next and then summer music festivals!

Thanks for reading! See you with another post soon- make sure you’re following me for more!!
