You hear some songs and they please your ears and you think *ah this is nice*. But some songs you really listen to, and the lyrics transcend music and become art. I’ve put together a little list of some of my favourites.
“So can you understand?
Why I want a daughter while I’m still young
I wanna hold her hand
And show her some beauty
Before all this damage is done
But if it’s too much to ask, it’s too much to ask
Then send me a son”
Arcade Fire- The Suburbs
I’m not sure if I need to do a little typing between each lyric, because really they speak for themselves, but how poignant is this? The imagery of babies and innocence juxtaposing the damage of the modern world really hits you and is definitely the standout lyric in an already great song.
“I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall”
Bon Iver- Skinny Love
I know, so unoriginal right? I don’t care! I think this song is the most beautiful song ever, it tears at your heartstrings and makes you feel all sorts. The lyrics are so desperate and dark but at the same time filled with so much love. Like an angry, sad love. So beautiful.
* So many covers of this song sing it all quaint and delicate and do they even understand the song?! I’m looking at you Birdy and Gavin Mikhail!*
‘As I watch the animals walking two by two,
Well who do you thinks gonna walk with you?
Cause they’re flooding this place
And starting brand new’
Sivu- Bodies
A biblical bit of brilliance from Sivu here. Similar to Skinny Love, it has that longing, that desperation, that emotion. He’s really underrated, and unfairly so, because he’s awesome. Spine tingling stuff.
‘No one knows me like the piano in my mother’s home’
No one knows me- Sampha
Honestly, every lyric on this song could make it here. The most haunting and personal, yet lovely and warm words are sung here. It’s my stand out song of 2017 with no doubt, and the song, although still nice, would not be anywhere near the sensational ballad it is, without the lyrics. Sheer brilliance.
I think that’s enough for now- this is easily a post I could do a part 2 of! I hope you enjoyed, and please check out my instagram links at the bottom of the page! Thanks!
P.S. My friend Dan Waggon has lots of opinions on song lyrics and maybe he’ll do a response post over on his blog! Check out his site regardless!
